The passion tree Jeffrey McDaniel (EEUU, 1967- )
This California Live Oak, at the end of my block, looks like a couple mid-fuck: ankles, thighs, groin, hips entwined, forming a single trunk, erupting into two separate bodies: a damsel tilted back, the green breeze of her hair, hands gripping the biceps of a thrusting lad, his rainbow spine in a perpetual state of timber. Most trees are only visible from the knees up, calves unraveled in dirt, shoes fallen off. Not this one. I keep a tiny piece of its bark under my pillow. I stuff its leaves in my underpants. I sleep naked in its branches, hoping to wake with its initials carved into my shoulder.

The archipelago of kisses Jeffrey McDaniel (EEUU, 1967- )
We live in a modern society. Husbands and wives don't grow on trees, like in the old days. So where does one find love? When you're sixteen it's easy, like being unleashed with a credit card in a department store of kisses. There's the first kiss. The sloppy kiss. The peck. The sympathy kiss. The backseat smooch. The we shouldn't be doing this kiss. The but your lips taste so good kiss. The bury me in an avalanche of tingles kiss. The I wish you'd quit smoking kiss. The I accept your apology, but you make me really mad sometimes kiss. The I know your tongue like the back of my hand kiss. As you get older, kisses become scarce. You'll be driving home and see a damaged kiss on the side of the road, with its purple thumb out. If you were younger, you'd pull over, slide open the mouth's red door just to see how it fits. Oh where does one find love? If you rub two glances, you get a smile. Rub two smiles, you get a warm feeling. Rub two warm feelings and presto-you have a kiss. Now what? Don't invite the kiss over and answer the door in your underwear. It'll get suspicious and stare at your toes. Don't water the kiss with whisky. It'll turn bright pink and explode into a thousand luscious splinters, but in the morning it'll be ashamed and sneak out of your body without saying good-bye, and you'll remember that kiss forever by all the little cuts it left on the inside of your mouth. You must nurture the kiss. Turn out the lights. Notice how it illuminates the room. Hold it to your chest and wonder if the sand inside hourglasses comes from a special beach. Place it on the tongue's pillow, then look up the first recorded kiss in an encyclopedia: beneath a Babylonian olive tree in 1200 B.C. But one kiss levitates above all the others. The intersection of function and desire. The I do kiss. The I'll love you through a brick wall kiss. Even when I'm dead, I'll swim through the Earth, like a mermaid of the soil, just to be next to your bones.

The biology of numbers Jeffrey McDaniel (EEUU, 1967- )
Once I dated a woman I only liked 43%. So I only listened to 43% of what she said. Only told the truth 43% of the time. And only kissed with 43% of my lips.
Some say you can't quantify desire, attaching a number to passion isn't right, that the human heart doesn't work like that. But for me it does-I walk down the street
and numbers appear on the foreheads of the people I look at. In bars, it's worse. With each drink, the numbers go up until every woman in the joint has a blurry
eighty something above her eyebrows, and the next day I can only remember 17% of what actually happened. That's the problem with booze-it screws with your math.

The quiet world Jeffrey McDaniel (EEUU, 1967- )
In an effort to get people to look into each other's eyes more, and also to appease the mutes, the government has decided to allot each person exactly one hundred and sixty-seven words, per day.
When the phone rings, I put it in to my ear Without saying hello. In the restaurant I point at chicken noodle soup. I am adjusting well to the new way.
Late at night, I call my long distance lover, proudly say I only used fifty-nine today. I saved the rest for you.
When she doesn't respond, I know she's used up all her words, so I slowly whisper I love you thirty-two and a third times. After that, we just sit on the line and listen to each other breathe.

Mannequin complex Jeffrey McDaniel (EEUU, 1967- )
During my formative years, my mother had this annoying habit of taking me into shoe stores and forgetting all about me.
She'd try on heels and pumps, sandals and beige leather boots, winking at herself in the mirror, like she was Cinderella.
I'd crawl into the stockroom behind the stacks of boxes, until the last employee clicked off the lights and headed home.
Then I'd emerge, place a shoe horn in the palm of my favorite mannequin, and sleep at her feet gleefully because she was my flesh and blood.

for Myke
It's like escaping a hot, bright room for the serenity oa a city at night, covered in snow.
People eliminated. A carpet of silence for taxies to whisper across. The world becoming
a pleasant dream of itself. The itch of want smoldering to life on skin. Memory sends
a chill vanishing between vertebrae. It's New Year's Eve. Hail the Calendar! As if
clocks will pause for a moment before reloading their long rifles. Years are tiny
freckles on the face of a century. Where is the constellation we gazed at each night
Through a bill rolled so tight the first President los his breath, as our eyeballs
literally unraveled? I am alone in the rectangular borough in the observatory,
where even fire trucks can't rescue the arsonist stretching his calves in my brain.
Amigos y lugares altos

Where babies come from Jeffrey McDaniel (EEUU, 1967- )
For my eighth birthday I got a toy train set my father helped assemble.
My job was to hand him pieces of track and re-light the cigarettes that went out
in his mouth. Halfway through, I asked him where babies come from.
He told me that eight years ago today I showed up on the front stoop
in a cardboard box, how he spent the whole afternoon putting me together,
just like this train set, that I was probably lucky the box arrived on a Saturday.

The offer Jeffrey McDaniel (EEUU, 1967- )
I want to locate a bit of you, cradle it, say: this, there is no word for this.
But they will. They who name everything will define our actions as we auction our bodies off to sleep.
In our single dram we'd compose a manifesto on the irregularity of scars.
The very idea demands preparation, as if choosing a school for an angel.
There are no angles. Just those things Blinking like the teeth of jackals Around the moon's significant tremble.
Isolate the idea of shaking our boides under the blank confort of down ant tell me which way will our knuckles face?
Now shake the idea of our isolated bodies As the sheets become our Miro.
If you stay, the walls will admit their cracks, See it forming, already on their lips.

Alibi school Jeffrey McDaniel (EEUU, 1967- )
My pal, Jake, majored in corruption. His final exam: a girl from the Midwest,
three weeks to dismantle eighteen years of good parenting. High results came early
in the easy days, with the principal taking his puff from the honor role in the bathroom.
In gym we learned how to turn our backs on the world at once; the team
elected me captain of varsity nosebleeds. At the prom, we parked our limousine
before doing the mandatory wind sprints; my date's eyes were big, hazel dictionaries.
At our homecoming Jake injected the clouds with a hero's last breath; rain on the victory parade
was greeted with cheers. The years rushed by with their tongues hanging out. We packed
our cages and invented course work overseas. In Guatemala, we copied back pain
for a hundred milligrams of extra credit and proudly parachuted into sleep. In Prague
we emptied our text books an guzzled chapters of Bohemian history. The class
kept shrinking until it was just me, passing all the social tests. I returned to America
fluent in disaster; all the smile I looked at collapsed. I walked my pneumonia
up Avenue A, where inconspicuous teachers assigned telepathic equations. My pupils
leapt from dilated chalkboards; a hundred consecutive nights of slow, dirty arithmetic
curdled inside of me. Graduation is an impossibility. Ditto expulsión.
I am permanently unrolled in the rambling Lectures of insomnia. Wake in the lab
with my back against the wall. Turn: the wall turns on me. I am the mutual friend
of enemy foxholes. It's like bowling for hostages: exactly beyond my periphery.
Coartada escuela
Regresé a América

The sink's dishes are the sink's problem as I ooh and aah at the complexity of balance implicit to keep the structure: eight glasses, thirteen bowls, a valley of forks, intact, while I run hot water over a knife for my onion.
There's a science to the bathtub's archipelago of grunge colonies that's necessary to America. My toothbruxh is the pin keeping Detroit from collapse. No, I can't cut my fingernails and risk re-ordering the universe's distribution of atoms, mass, stars popping like light bulbs.
And theis new, improved imaginary lover - her whiplash parabola of tongue snaps sandpaper over spine. Yeah, in thirteen seconds of pure logic I boomerang to the future and return as a glimpse.

The boy inside the turtle Jeffrey McDaniel (EEUU, 1967- )
Yesterday was an extra-long day for the boy with no arms or legs. Neighborhood children played outside his window. A soft machine, they circled, joined hands, closed eyes, jumped up and down: shoelaces, giggles moving in time. One caught the boy peering. The boy contorted out of sight, his breaths lumped on one another like cows in a mat house. He twisted too slow. Look, it's the turtle! The children gassed like an audience responding to a laugh sign. He shifted his weight left to right back left, again right, then felt from his chair- a pilot balling out of a crashing plane. He was familiar with this Falling. So was his mother. She'd surrounded his chair with six layers of towels. He waited there like a spilled bucket of green paint. When he no longer heard any semblance of playing, he called his mom for help.

The day it rained splinters Jeffrey McDaniel (EEUU, 1967- )
Lady Liberty, I understand your confusion, watching that first plane smash into the skyscraper, but surely
you could've swatted the second one from the air, or at least leaned forward and caught the people
who leaped. They jumped as humans and landed like meat. If only we'd put a hose in your fingers,
not a torch, you could've doused the flames. And where was God? Perhaps blessing some other country
for a change, as our fifty lucky stars sank into us like shark's teeth. The sky was a big black cloud,
and the cloud had feet. Now the celestial scoreboard reads: Allah 1, God 0. Soon the blood will flow,
but with so much dirt in our throats, how can revenge taste sweet? Carnage Asada is what they served
in the voluptuous borough of grief, lifting the hem of mayhem, feeding us a glimpse up the skirt of eternity.
Photos of the missing taped to every phone booth. Operator, call Batman, tell him we're stuck
in the first act of a blockbuster, and there's no normal to return to. Normal is entombed in the debris,
the l demolished like a building, the o a fireman's mouth opened in scream, as F-15's scrape like the nails
of a prostitute down the sky's chalkboard. What yardstick gets used to secure a measured response?
Already scuba divers have plunged into the melting pot.I hope they dig with sacred shovels, for there are spirits
in that rubble, the closest thing we have to holy land. But maybe those buildings were phoenixes. Doesn't
our language suggest that mess is merely a stop on the way to messiah? Before squashing all Arabs
into a sentence, like a four syllable word, with only one meaning, we should what becomes of the ashes.
Maybe a dab of those cinders will make irises bloom in the retinas of the blind, hair sprout
on a bald man's scalp, tulips erupt through sidewalk cracks. I mean, haven't they already
succeeded in making compassion gush from the tough leather of every New Yorker's heart?
No

Ethel's lament (Ethel Rosenberg) Jeffrey McDaniel (EEUU, 1967- )
for David Greenglass
"Cover your eyes when lightning flashes" is what our mother used to say. Now your pupils are hourglasses filled with my ashes, as you drag
that sack of moustaches and cash. We were siblings only in name. What do you see when lightning flashes? See how I've decorated your grave.
Fifty years you lived off my ashes. In terms of history, you left your stain. In your chest, there's just a beating rash, an umbrella that dissolves in the rain.
How did it feel to swallow your name? I am what you see when lightning flashes. I won't let you sleep till you give back my ashes
Mira como he decorado tu tumba.

Boss of the nethers Jeffrey McDaniel (EEUU, 1967- )
The cupped cervix sat on the coffee table. We tried not to stare, like our pupils would get fried by its brightness. Perhaps my ex-wife left it as a reminder of the time when human beings had hips, back when we had bodies. Yes, that was fun-a cupcake of breeze disintegrating on our cheeks, a banana muffin undressing in our nostrils, but bodies broke down too, and things are easier now. Strange, how we see further without eyeballs. Our eyes tricked us into thinking a wall was something not be seen through .Mouths got in the way of saying what needed saying. When they were invented mouths were only supposed to be used in emergencies, but we couldn't resist, which made god so mad he ripped our ear in half, and still we didn't listen.
