Verse Djuna Barnes (1892-1982)
Should any ask «what it is to be in love With one you cannot slough, she being young?» What should it be, we answer, who can prove The falling of the milk-tooth on the tongue, Is autumn in the mouth enough. (¿The young?)
Verso

Transfiguration Djuna Barnes (1892-1982)
The prophet digs with iron hands Into the shifting desert sands.
The insect back to larva goes; Struck to seed the climbing rose.
To Moses’ empty gorge, like smoke Rush inward all the words he spoke.
The knife of Cain lifts from the thrust; Abel rises from the dust.
Pilate cannot find his tongue; Bare the tree where Judas hung.
Lucifer roars up from earth; Down falls Christ into his death.
To Adam back the rib is plied, A creature weeps within his side.
Eden’s reach is thick and green The forest blows, no beast is seen.
The unchained sun, in raging thirst, Feeds the last day to the first.
Labels: Djuna Barnes |

Ah my God! Djuna Barnes (1892-1982)
Ah my God, what is it that we love! This flesh laid on un like a wrinkled glove? Bones caught in haste from out some lustful bed, And for momentum, this a devil’s shove.
What is it that hurriedly we kiss, This mouth that seeks our own, or still more this Small sorry eye within the cheated head, As if it mourned the something that we miss.
This pale, this over eager listening ear The wretched mouth its soft lament to hear, To mark the noiseless and the anguished fall Of still one other warm misshapen tear.
Short arms, and bruised feet long set apart To walk with us forever from the start. Ah God, is this the reason that we love Because such things are death blows to the heart?
Labels: Djuna Barnes |

Twilight of the Illicit Djuna Barnes (1892-1982)
You, with your long black udders And your calms, Your spotted linen and your Slack’ning arms. With satiated fingers dragging at your palms.
Your knees set far apart like Heavy spheres; With discs upon your eyes like Husks of tears And great ghastly loops of gold Snared in your ears.
Your dying hair hand-beaten ‘Round your head. Lips, long lengthened by wise words Unsaid. And in your living all grimaces Of the dead.
One sees you sitting in the sun Asleep; With the sweeter gifts you had And didn’t keep, One grieves that the altars of Your vice lie deep.
You, the twilight powder of A fire-wet down; You, the massive mother of Illicit spawn; While the others shrink in virtue You have borne.
We’ll see you staring in the sun A few more years, With discs upon your eyes like Husks of tears; And great ghastly loops of gold Snared in your ears.
Labels: Djuna Barnes |

The dreamer Djuna Barnes (1892-1982)
The night comes down, in ever-darkening shapes that seem- To grope, with eerie fingers for the window –the- To rest to sleep, enfolding me, as in a dream Faith –might I waken!
And drips the rain with seeming sad, insistent beat. Shivering across the pane, drooping tear-wise, And softly patters by, like little fearing feet. Faith –this weather!
The feathery ash is fluttered; there upon the pane, The dying fire casts a flickering ghostly beam, Then closes in the night and gently falling rain. Faith –what darkness!
Labels: Djuna Barnes |

Discontent Djuna Barnes (EEUU, 1892-1982)
Truly, when I pause and stop to think That with an hempen rope I'll spool to bed, Aware that tears of mourners on the brink Are merely spindrift of the shaken head, Then, as the squirrel quarreling his nut, I with my winter store am in dispute, For none will burrow in to share my bread.
Descontento

Satires (The laying on of hands...) Djuna Barnes (EEUU, 1892-1982)
(The laying on of hands being taken off) There should be gardens in this parlament of flies And this old fool, as he partakes of time As his gymnasium -will not survive Why should he, grave with her dread Mary, in labour with her dream, Spins Jesus in.

|
A victim is a state of decline Djuna Barnes (1892-1982)
There's that truth that only victims savour, When it be young, and raining yet all over, The crushing of the medlar quince on the tongue Ruptures the mouth, however- In some vigil of the earth, With some greater theme imbued And some deal later- But in some spaddle of the earth And with some subtler theme imbued, The victor brings the victim, his Mother. Wrapped in stealth, Bucked down and whack'd about in slaughter (laughter) Walking his bones away into himself.

| Djuna Barnes -As cried (And others ask...)- |
|
As cried (And others ask...) Djuna Barnes (1892-1982)
And others ask, "What's it to be possessed Of one you cannot keep, she being old?" There is no robin in my eye to build a nest For any bride who shakes against the cold, Nor is there a claw that would arrest I keep the hoof from stepping on her breath- The ravelled clue that dangles crock by a thread, Who hooked her to the underworld. I said in a breath I keep a woman, as all do, feeding death.

To one in another mood Djuna Barnes (1892-1982)
O dear beloved, shall I not go back From gazing you always with wet eyes, And mournful kisses from these lips where lies More honey than your aloes? Must I crack Still darker herbs, and sighing keep the track With feigned lamenting and with fearful cries, Slow twining you about with blasphemies Because I would be dancing? Nay, I lack The needed dull intoning of despair. Nor in me echoes your too sombre mood, Nor is it in my heart. Nor anywhere Within my flesh the very flesh you wooed. Then wherefore shall I loose my braided hair Hiding my eyes, pretending that I brood?

Discant Djuna Barnes (1892-1982)
His mother said (Who long since in her mother is been hid) "I am the birth-place and the dead." "Indeed" he said "Let it be done, Let us give our tigers, each one to the other one."
Discante
