Malade
Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923)

The man in the room next to mine
has the same complaint as I.
When I wake in the night I hear him turning.
And then he coughs.
And I cough.
And after a silence I cough. And he coughs again.
This goes on for a long time.
Until I feel we are like two roosters
calling to each other at false dawn.
From far-away hidden farms.

Malade

Y toso yo
Y después de un silencio yo toso. Y él vuelve a toser

Katherine Mansfield -Camomile tea-
Camomile tea
Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923)

Outside the sky is light with stars;
There's a hollow roaring from the sea.
And, alas! for the little almond flowers,
The wind is shaking the almond tree.

How little I thought, a year ago,
In the horrible cottage upon the Lee
That he and I should be sitting so
And sipping a cup of camomile tea.

Light as feathers the witches fly,
The horn of the moon is plain to see;
By a firefly under a jonquil flower
A goblin toasts a bumble-bee.

We might be fifty, we might be five,
So snug, so compact, so wise are we!
Under the kitchen-table leg
My knee is pressing against his knee.

Our shutters are shut, the fire is low,
The tap is dripping peacefully;
The saucepan shadows on the wall
Are black and round and plain to see.

Katherine Mansfield -The meeting-
The meeting
Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923)

We started speaking,
Looked at each other, then turned away.
The tears kept rising to my eyes
But I could not weep.
I wanted to take your hand
But my hand trembled.
You kept counting the days
Before we should meet again.
But both of us felt in our hearts
That we parted for ever and ever.
The ticking of the little clock filled the quiet room.
"Listen," I said. "It is so loud,
Like a horse galloping on a lonely road,
As loud as that--a horse galloping past in the night."
You shut me up in your arms.
But the sound of the clock stifled our hearts' beating.
You said, "I cannot go: all that is living of me
Is here for ever and ever."
Then you went.
The world changed. The sound of the clock grew fainter,
Dwindled away, became a minute thing.
I whispered in the darkness, "If it stops, I shall die."

El encuentro

Empezamos a hablar
Nos miramos; dejamos de mirarnos
Las lágrimas subían a mis ojos
Pero no podía llorar
Deseaba tomar tu mano

Katherine Mansfield -Very early Spring-
Very early Spring
Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923)

The fields are snowbound no longer;
There are little blue lakes and flags of tenderest green.
The snow has been caught up into the sky--
So many white clouds--and the blue of the sky is cold
.Now the sun walks in the forest,
He touches the bows and stems with his golden fingers;
They shiver, and wake from slumber.
Over the barren branches he shakes his yellow curls.
Yet is the forest full of the sound of tears...
A wind dances over the fields.
Shrill and clear the sound of her waking laughter,
Yet the little blue lakes tremble
And the flags of tenderest green bend and quiver.

Temprana Primavera

Katherine Mansfield -Why love is blind-
Why love is blind
Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923)

The Cupid child tired of the winter day
Wept and lamented for the skies of blue
Till, foolish child! He cried his eyes away-
And violets grew.

Hasta que, ¡niño tonto! Lloró todos sus ojos;
Y crecieron las violetas.

Katherine Mansfield -The Gulf-
The Gulf
Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923)

A Gulf of silence separates us from each other.
I stand at one side of the gulf, you at the other.
I cannot see you or hear you, yet know that you are there.
Often I call you by your childish name
And pretend that the echo to my crying is your voice.
How can we bridge the gulf? Never by speech or touch.
Once I thought we might fill it quite up with tears.
Now I want to shatter it with our laughter.

Katherine Mansfield -To L.H.B.-
To L.H.B.
Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923)

Last night for the first time since you were dead
I walked with you, my brother, in a dream.
We were at home again beside the stream
Fringed with tall berry bushes, white and red.
"Don't touch them: they are poisonous," I said.
But your hand hovered, and I saw a beam
Of strange, bright laughter flying round your head
And as you stooped I saw the berries gleam.
"Don't you remember? We called them Dead Man's Bread!"
I woke and heard the wind moan and the roar
Of the dark water tumbling on the shore.
Where--where is the path of my dream for my eager feet?
By the remembered stream my brother stands
Waiting for me with berries in his hands..."
These are my body. Sister, take and eat."

"¿No recuerdas?
Son mi cuerpo. Hermana, tómalas y come".

Katherine Mansfield -When I was a bird-
When I was a bird
Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923)

I climbed up the karaka tree
Into a nest all made of leaves
But soft as feathers.
I made up a song that went on singing all by itself
And hadn't any words, but got sad at the end.
There were daisies in the grass under the tree.
I said just to try them:
"I'll bite off your heads and give them to my little
children to eat.
"But they didn't believe I was a bird;
They stayed quite open.
The sky was like a blue nest with white feathers
And the sun was the mother bird keeping it warm.
That's what my song said: though it hadn't any words.
Little Brother came up the patch, wheeling his barrow.
I made my dress into wings and kept very quiet.
Then when he was quite near I said: "Sweet, sweet!"
For a moment he looked quite startled;
Then he said: "Pooh, you're not a bird; I can see
your legs.
"But the daisies didn't really matter,
And Little Brother didn't really matter;
I felt just like a bird.

Pero no creyeron que yo fuera un pájaro;
y siguieron bien abiertas.
por un momento pareció sorprendido;
Y mi Hermanito realmente no importaba;
Yo me sentía igual a un pájaro.
