The forms Sharon Olds (1942- )
I always had the feeling my mother would die for us, jump into a fire to pull us out, her hair burning like a halo, jump into water, her white body going down and turning slowly, the astronaut whose hose is cut falling into blackness. She would have covered us with her body, thrust her breasts between our chests and the knife, slipped us into her coat pocket outside the showers. In disaster, an animal mother, she would have died for us, but in life as it was she had to put herself first. She had to do whatever he told her to do to the children, she had to protect herself. In war, she would have died for us, I tell you she would, and I know: I am a student of war, of gas ovens, smothering, knives, drowning, burning, all the forms in which I have experienced her love.

Station Sharon Olds (1942- )
Coming in off the dock after writing, I approached the house, and saw your long grandee face in the light of a lamp with a parchment shade the color of flame.
An elegant hand on your beard. Your tapered eyes found me on the lawn. You looked as the lord looks down from a narrow window and you are descended from lords. Calmly, with no hint of shyness you examined me, the wife who runs out on the dock to write as soon as one child is in bed, leaving the other to you.
Your long mouth, flexible as an archer's bow, did not curve. We spent a long moment in the truth of our situation, the poems heavy as poached game hanging from my hands.

Tricks Sharon Olds (1942- )
My mother the magician can make eggs appear in her hand. My ovaries appear in her hand, black as figs and wrinkled as fingers on washday.
She closes her hand, and when she opens it nothing.
She pulls silk scarves out of her ear sin all colors, jewels from her mouth, milk from her nipples. My mother the naked magician stands on the white stage and pulls her tricks.
She takes out her eyes. The holes of her sockets fill with oil, it seeps up, with bourbon and feces. Out of her nostrils she pulls scroll sand they take fire.
In the grand finale she draws my father slowly out of her cunt and puts him in a tall silk hat and he disappears.
I said she can turn anything into nothing, she's a hole in space, she's the tops, the best magician. All this
I have pulled out of my mouth right before your eyes.
Artificios

Barometer Sharon Olds (1942- )
Being a woman whose elder sister abandoned a child —dropped her mid-journey, left her like a husband— I am not like other mothers. At night, I go into my daughter's room, and listen to the cool, creaking cistern of her breath; I go into my son's, the cricket still safe in his throat, his chest; I wish I could stand over my own bed and listen to my breathing, to know what weather's coming.

The unjustly punished child Sharon Olds (1942- )
The child screams in his room. Rage heats his head. He is going through changes like metal under deep pressure at high temperatures.
When he cools off and comes out of that door He will not be the same child who ran in and slammed it. An alloy has been added. Now he will crack along different lines when tapped.
He is stronger. The long impurification has begun this morning.

Sex without love Sharon Olds (1942- )
How do they do it, the ones who make love without love? Beautiful as dancers, gliding over each other like ice-skaters over the ice, fingers hooked inside each other's bodies, faces red as steak, wine, wet as the children at birth whose mothers are going to give them away. How do they come to the come to the come to the God come to the still waters, and not love the one who came there with them, light rising slowly as steam off their joined skin? These are the true religious, the purists, the pros, the ones who will not accept a false Messiah, love the priest instead of the God. They do not mistake the lover for their own pleasure, they are like great runners: they know they are alone with the road surface, the cold, the wind, the fit of their shoes, their over-all cardio- vascular health--just factors, like the partner in the bed, and not the truth, which is the single body alone in the universe against its own best time.

The victims Sharon Olds (1942- )
When Mother divorced you, we were glad. She took it and took it, in silence, all those years and then kicked you out, suddenly, and her kids loved it. Then you were fired, and we grinned inside, the way people grinned when Nixon's helicopter lifted off the South Lawn for the last time. We were tickled to think of your office taken away, your secretaries taken away, your lunches with three double bourbons, your pencils, your reams of paper. Would they take your suits back, too, those dark carcasses hung in your closet, and the black noses of your shoes with the large pores? She had taught us to take it, to hate you and take it until we pricked at your annihilation, Father. Now I pass bums in doorways, the white slugs of their bodies gleaming through slits in their suits of compressed silt, the stained flippers of theur hands, the underwater fire of their eyes, ships gone down with the lanterns lit, and I wonder who took it and took it from then in silence until they had given it all away and had nothing left but this.
