Consul Jones. A glimpse of St Beuno's through the eye of a beadle
Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889)
Welsh air "Cader Idris" or "Jenny Jones"
(My name is Edward Morgan, I live at Llangollen)
My name´s Peter Prestage, I´m beadle at Beuno´s,
My post is a sinecure, sine qua non,
I have made it a point to see what´s under my nose
And here´s a short statement of things that go on.
There´s Hayden at work upon "graces" and "merits"
Barraud warbles snatches of tunes and of tones,
While Reeves all the while may be out with the ferrets,
Our tastes are so various, "consule Jones".
Bacon (the title for once he must pardon)
And James the Primeval from over the Main
Are evergreen natures from Paradise garden,
Mates ever mating and mating again.
Cardwell an Englishman once and a true man
His thoughts all turned German, his words all gone gruff:
A learned and amiable bonfire scarce human
Serves to warn Dubberley not to take snuff.
Scoles an Apostle whose method is "souping"
Has cakes for the belly, and truths for the head.
All round the affectionate Taffies come trouping
They know on which side he has buttered their bread.
Clayton a sturdy ostensible Sisyphus,
Making a road which will never be made,
Looks on, and let others (he seems in a busy fuss)
Trundle the barrow and sweat at the spade.
Murphy makes sermons so fierce and hell-fiery,
Mothers miscarry and spinsters go mad.
Hayes pens his seven and twentieth diary,
Bodo´does not, there´s no time to be had.
Lund, ever youthful, well vizor´d and turban´d,
Robs hives of that honey which we are to sip
And we should live at peace but we harbour a serpent,
´tis calumny dropped from the Lapasture´s lip.
These are our notables though we have others,
Rigby alon would employ me till ten,
And I can but allude to two bivalves of brothers
The Splaines of the "North Pole", the Kerrs of the Den.
Of the first I´ll add so much, if they´ll not look daggers,
I fancy they´ll list in the cavalry soon–
For I think, as I see them swing by with such swaggers
That a Sib´s a Huzzar and that Bill´s a dragoon.
How blest is the man with a fireplace and scuttle!
His mate of the "Hamlet" sits cold in his cot.
The laybrothers´distinction of bedrooms is subtle:
Some "heating by piping" and some "piping hot".
Such are my thoughts of our folk and our domicile
Couched in plain language not meant to be rude;
And having thus been as good as my promise I´ll
Keep you no longer, and here I´ll conclude.

mi puesto es una sinecura, sine qua non,
qué pasa ante mis narices me he propuesto saber
y de cuanto sucede va esta breve relación.
Allí está Hayden, trabaja sobre "gracias" y "valores",
Barraud gorjea fragmentos de aires sincopados
mientras tanto Reeve habrá salido con los hurones
nuestros gustos, "cónsul Jones", son así de variados.
Bacon (esta vez por su título debe darme permiso)
y James el Primitivo que viene de allende el mar
son criaturas siempre verdes del jardín del Paraíso
compañeros que aparean sin cesar de aparear.
Cardwell, hace algún tiempo inglés y hombre sincero,
piensa hoy como germano con áspero decir:
ese erudito, amable y casi inhumano chisporroteo
previene a Dubberley que el rapé debe omitir.
Scoles, un apóstol cuyo método es "darles de comer"
tiene tortas para la panza y verdades para el cerebro.
Por todos lados los cariñosos galesitos llegan en tropel:
ellos saben dónde el sol calienta más en el invierno.
Clayton, vigoroso y ostensible Sísifo
trazando un camino que jamás se acaba,
mira y deja que los otros (se lo ve atareado, agitadísimo)
empujen la carretilla y transpiren la pala.
Murphy da sermones tan fieros, de infiernos tan ardientes,
que adelanta los partos y aterra a las solteras.
De su diario Hayes escribe el tomo veintisiete
pero Bodo se priva; no es tiempo de zonceras.
Lund, siempre joven, con velo y turbante vestido,
roba en las colmenas la miel que habremos de beber;
en paz viviríamos si a una sierpe no diésemos asilo,
esta calumnia en labios de Lapasture empieza a crecer.
Esos son los notables, pero otros también tenemos;
Rigby solo hasta las diez me ocuparía;
y aludiré al pasar a dos bivalvos fraternos:
los Splaine del "Polo Norte" y los Kerr de "La Guarida".
De los primeros añadiré algo más, si no me lanzan puñales,
en la caballería pronto se enrolarán, eso supongo yo,
pues creo, al verlos marchar con aires tan marciales,
que nuestro Sib es húsar y nuestro Bill dragón.
¡Bendito el hombre con hogar y un cubo de carbón al lado!
Su compañero del "Hamlet" se sienta helado en el catre.
Los hermanos legos distinguen sutilmente los cuartos:
unos "se calientan por tubos" y en otros "el aire está que arde".
Tales son mis ideas sobre los nuestros y nuestra morada
dichas con lenguaje llano que no quiere ser ofensivo
y cumpliendo mi promesa, porque eso no cuesta nada,
